Requirements to Become a Bus Driver
North Miami Community Schools 2025- Submit Non-certified application. Apply Online Today!
- Complete an Non-Certified Background check. Apply for your Non-Certified Background check now!
- Pass drug test
- Pass a physical
- Obtain a CDL license (class B) -Permit
- Enroll in FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearing House
- Attend a three-day pre-service training course (Rich will enroll you for this)
- List all medications you are taking
- Ride and observe with cdl driver ---- 4 hours (documented)
- Drive with cdl driver on bus ------ 8 hours (document)
- Pass skills test
- Effective January 1, 2002 – Must pass bus driver performance standards and measurements test

North Miami Community Schools ACTIVITY BUS USE REQUIREMENTS
- Must be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver’s license.
- Please bring a copy of your driver's license to Central Office.
- Must complete volunteer coach background screening.
- Must complete the Special Purpose Bus Driver Training online course and receive certificate.
- Click above link, create an account, click ‘office of school transportation,’ then ‘special purpose bus driving.
- After completion, please print a copy of the certificate for Central Office or e-mail it to: egearhart@nmcs.k12.in.us
- Must present course completion certificate, a valid driver license, and receive in-person orientation from the Transportation Director or other certified driver approved by the Transportation Director, including a supervised test drive.
REGULATIONS
Only certified drivers, meeting all of the above requirements, will be allowed to drive an activity bus.
All activity buses must be scheduled through the Central Office, either directly or through your school or department.
Trip Tickets will be placed on the driver seat and keys will be distributed by the Central Office.
END OF TRIP PROTOCOLS
1. It is expected that all buses be refueled when returned after an event. Unleaded fuel only! The pumps are clearly marked. No Diesel!
2. Drivers are expected to make sure all trash is picked up from the bus after each use. Always!
4. Close all windows, all the way, after each use, even if rain isn’t in the forecast.
5. Complete Trip Ticket.
6. Place completed trip ticket and key under the driver seat before locking bus for the night.
7. Report any damage or mechanical issues to the Transportation Director as soon as possible. 765-226-0836 - Must be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver’s license.

A school bus is stopped on the road, with it's STOP sign extended:
Two-Lane Roadways
If a school bus stops on a two lane road and the red flashing lights are activated and the stop arm is extended, all motorists MUST stop.
Multi-Lane Roadways with NO Barrier between Lanes
When a school bus stops on a multi-lane roadway without a barrier and the red flashing lights are activated and the stop arm is extended, all motorists MUST stop.
Multi-Lane Roadway with a Grassy and/or Concrete Barrier
When a school bus stops and the red flashing lights are activated and the stop arm is extended, only vehicles behind the bus MUST stop. Vehicles that are approaching from the opposite side are NOT required to stop.
